Spencer Glacier Iceberg Kayaking Tour

In partnership with the Alaska Railroad, our Spencer Glacier kayaking tour explores Spencer Lake and the edge of the glacier. This is an amazing Glacier location to experience and learn about blue ice, up close and personal, on this glacier kayaking tour! For those staying in Anchorage or Girdwood, this half-day tour is an excellent way to experience the wilderness away from the crowds.

Your Alaska adventure begins with a scenic drive along the Turnagain Arm from Anchorage, with magnificent views of the Chugach and Kenai mountain ranges. Your guide will provide opportunities for photo stops to share this stunning area’s interesting history and geology. These are the second biggest tides in North America and home to our country’s only bore tide.

At Portage Depot, we’ll board the historic Alaska Railroad Glacier Discovery Train and enjoy our deli lunch during the short but scenic ride to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. From there, we’ll transfer to Spencer Glacier Lake via a one-mile shuttle bus ride.

At Spencer Glacier Lake, you’ll be wowed by the floating ‘icebergs’ as we paddle leisurely for about an hour through the pristine glacial water with our sea kayaks. Get plenty of photos during this extraordinary experience. This day trip is an excellent way to experience the wilderness of Alaska away from the crowds.

The Spencer Whistle Stop and Glacier are located just south of Portage Valley and the Turnagain Arm in the Kenai Mountains and Chugach National Forest. It is a remote wilderness area that is only accessible by train. It’s also home to one of the most spectacular and visible glaciers along the Railbelt: Spencer Glacier, a massive wall of ice cascading down the mountains to Spencer Lake.

After our Kayaking experience, we’ll flag down the train and ride back to Portage to return to Anchorage with our guide by about 6:30 pm. An optional return all the way to Anchorage aboard the train is available for $57 extra. This option arrives in Anchorage at 9:30.
